Refer A Friend

With Thanksgiving around the corner,   I want to personally thank all of our guests who have referred their friends and family. Referrals are the life-blood of our practice. It is the highest compliment that I could receive. I appreciate your confidence and trust. For those who are happy with the treatment they have received and have not referred anybody, please refer your friends, co-workers and family members! They will enjoy the same dental treatment that you are accustomed to in a warm, gentle, caring and friendly office. Our hi-tech diagnosis and treatment will provide them with beautiful long lasting restorations that are something to smile about.     Some things are too good to keep to yourself, so refer a friend today!

See Before and After Pictures

Halloween is over, the holiday parties are coming soon and the holiday treats linger. It is important to remember good oral hygiene and a few helpful tips to keep your teeth healthy and restorations intact.

1) Limit your partaking of treats from the trick or treat bag. Chewy or sticky candies have a tendency to pull out crowns and fillings.

2) Don't freeze any candy bars and then chew on them, teeth or fillings can crack under the extra pressure.

3) Brush 30 minutes after having any treats.

4) If you forget the above and have a problem, please give the office a call, at 312-266-0044!

I have many guests still putting off needed work, citing we will do it next year.  Next year is now this year.

And this year is coming to a close!

Most importantly, prompt treatment can avoid more extensive and more expensive dental procedures. What is simple now, can turn into a more severe problem later. We would hate for you to have a problem arise at an inconvenient time.

Remember, any insurance benefits that renew Jan 1, are lost Dec 31st.  You have paid for these benefits, why don't you use them.

Our office will be closed Thanksgiving and December 24 through December 28. I will have emergency coverage during that time.

I want to give our guests and friends a heartfelt thank you for your loyalty and friendship over the past year.

I still  want to help each and every one of our guests get the needed care during these tough times.  We will work with you to help you afford the treatment.  Contact Nichole to see what we can do for you.
We look forward to seeing you at the office in the near future.

Do Toothpastes Really Matter?

All toothpastes are not created equally!

Yes, the ingredients in the toothpastes are different.

Some toothpastes can:

  • fight gingivitis
  • control plaque
  • prevent cavities
  • prevent tarter
  • help sensitive teeth
  • whiten your teeth
What do you want your toothpaste to do?

There are only 2 toothpastes that have proven to fight gingivitis; Crest Pro-Health and Colgate Total. The active ingredients are Stannous Fluoride and Triclosan respectively. The FDA is currently reviewing Triclosan for safety. These ingredients eliminate the bacteria that is associated with gingivitis. So if you have any reddened gums or any bleeding our suggestion is Crest Pro-Health toothpaste. The sign of healthly gum tissue is the absence of bleeding on probing. Make that your new year's resolution!

Sometimes it is necessary to come in for a cleaning 3 or 4 times a year to keep your gums healthy. Most insurance companies will not pay for it, but then they don't care if you lose your teeth.

Let us know what you want your toothpaste to do and we can steer you in the proper direction. Don't forget to stop in for your free samples of toothpaste.

Dr. Widen attended an all day seminar on
Medications in Dentistry

Many of our guests are on medications. These medications can have interactions with each other and have reactions with some of the anesthetics and other medications we prescribe. So it is manditory that we update your dental record to reflect the current medications taken.

Many of these medications can cause your mouth to become dry, called Xerostomia. If this condition continues for even a short period of time it can have a deleterious effect on you teeth. There are ways to help increase your saliva flow and protect your teeth, please contact us or tell us at your next visit.

Some of our guests in the past needed to be premedicated before coming into the office. The guidelines have changed and you may not need to be premedicated. Give us a call and we can tell you if you need to take anything before your appointment.

More Tips from Dr. Widen:

Brush your teeth for a full two minutes every day. Be careful not to brush too hard, and pick a soft-bristled brush with tapered tips. Electric toothbrushes have proven to remove more plaque, if interested in one, please discuss it with us!

Brush gently using a circular stroke and start in a different area of your mouth each time you brush.  That way you minimize the abrasive effects of the toothpaste on the teeth.

Don't like the burning of Listerine? Reach for a mouthwash that is both alcohol and sugar-free.

Crest Pro-Health is both sugar and alcohol free, receive a free sample with your next cleaning.

Chewing sugarless gum and mints is a great way to help protect your teeth against enamel decay, but make sure what you chew is sugarless in order to prevent tooth decay.

Sugar-free gum like Orbit removes food particles from the teeth that can cause decay if left, it will also stimulate your salivary glands to neutralize the acid bacteria produce when they consume food.

Yogurt is a healthy alternative to ice cream!

Research has shown that higher yogurt levels corresponded to higher beneficial HDL levels and had other beneficial cardiovascular health benefits. Researchers also found that consuming at least 2 ounces of yogurt reduced the risk of deep pockets by 60%.
