FROM DR. WIDEN
With Halloween around the corner, it is important to remember good oral hygiene and a few helpful tips to keep your teeth healthy and restorations intact.

1) Limit your partaking of treats from the trick or treat bag. Chewy or sticky candies have a tendency to pull out crowns and fillings.

2) Don't freeze any candy bars and then chew on them, teeth or fillings can crack under the extra pressure.

3) Brush 30 minutes after having any treats.

4) If you forget the above and have a problem, please give the office a call, at 312-266-0044!

5) Have a safe halloween.

I have many guests still putting off needed work, citing we will do it next year.  Next year is now this year.

And this year is coming to a close!

Most importantly, prompt treatment can avoid more extensive and more expensive dental procedures. What is simple now, can turn into a more severe problem later. We would hate for you to have a problem arise at an inconvenient time.

Remember, any insurance benefits that renew Jan 1, are lost Dec 31st.  You have paid for these benefits, why don't you use them.

I want to give our guests and friends a heartfelt thank you for your loyalty and friendship over the past year.

I still  want to help each and every one of our guests get the needed care during these tough times.  We will work with you to allow you to afford the treatment without hardships.  Contact Nichole to see what we can do for you.

We look forward to seeing you at the office in the near future.

Warmly,

Dr. Ron Widen and Nichole

 Dr. Oz's
 Advice:

Brush Your Teeth to Prevent a Heart Attack!

View Dr. Oz's video
on Good Morning America

New research shows that oral health may impact overall health more than previously thought!

Studies indicate there is a 12 times increase in heart attacks and a four times increase in stroke in patients with gum-disease.  The plaque-building bacteria get into the blood stream and cause serious problems throughout the body.

You would be worried if your scalp started to bleed when you brushed your hair, so call us if your gums bleed when you brush your teeth.  The best indicator for healthy gums are gums that do not bleed.

Do you have any sore or bleeding gums?  These are signs you should not be ignoring. Please call us at

More Tips from Dr. Widen:

Brush your teeth for a full two minutes every day. Be careful not to brush too hard, and pick a soft-bristled brush with tapered tips.

Brush gently using a circular stroke and start in a different area of your mouth each time you brush.  That way you minimize the abrasive effects on the teeth from the toothpaste.

Make sure your toothpaste does not contain triclosan or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as ingredients.

Colgate Total has Triclosan and most other commerical brands (Crest, etc) have SLS as a foaming agent.  Fluoridex Sensitity formula is one toothpaste that is SLS Free, pick up a tube at the office today!

Reach for a natural mouthwash that is both alcohol and sugar-free.

Crest Pro-Health is both sugar and alcohol free, receive a free sample with your next cleaning.

Chewing sugarless gum and mints is a great way to help protect your teeth against enamel decay, but make sure what you chew is sugarless in order to prevent tooth decay.

Sugar-free gum like Orbit removes food particles from the teeth that can cause decay if left, it will also stimulate your salivary glands to neutralize the acid bacteria produce when they consume food.

Dr. Oz Quiz Answers
Dr. Widen Additions

1) Before breakfast, because you want to get the acculumated plaque off the teeth
as soon as possible and after breakfast the acid produced by the bacteria weakens the tooth structure and brushing afterwards would brush away weakend enamel. 1/2 hour after meal.

I agree that one should wait 1/2 hour after eating to brush, with the most important time to brush being right before going to bed.  The plaque and bacteria must be cleaned from the teeth before retiring otherwise they stay all night long undisturbed with a diminished saliva flow and are allowed to cause tooth decay, inflammation  and gum disease.

2) 3 months is longest, because they get worn out and there is ecoli and fecal matter on the brush from flushing the toilet with the lid open and spreading the bacteria.  Also, change the brush is you are sick so you do not re infect yourself.

When the bristles of the toothbrush are no longer erect then it is time to replace your toothbrush. If this is happening within a month or 6 weeks then you are brushing too hard, lighten up the grip on the toothbrush or get an electric brush that will prevent over brushing. Even electric toothbrush heads need to be replaced.

3) What is the best beverage for your teeth, Cofee, Tea, Water?

Coffee or Tea, the phenols attack the plaque and soften it making it easier to remove.  Green Tea stains less than coffee.

Of course, you should be drinking plenty of water to hydrate yourself and limit coffee and other caffeinated drinks.  If your teeth become stained there are in-office or take-home products that can brighten your teeth.  Give us a call to learn about what might work for you.

4) Pea sized, or you can get too much fluoride and it can stain your teeth.  This is especially true for young children, since sometimes they swallow the toothpaste instead of rinsing it out.
